Cutaway project

An exercise in faithful reproduction

This 3D modeling project was part of a required assignment: from a selection of 24 reference images, we had to choose one and recreate the scene as accurately as possible. I selected a complex illustration made up of several distinct zones: a bedroom with a bed, curtains, and plants; an astronomy area with a giant telescope; a central structure with a stylized planetary system; and a basement turned into a laboratory.

Organization and modeling of elements

The original image had many details and areas. I divided the scene into blocks: furniture, architectural structures, scientific or decorative elements. Each part was modeled in Maya, respecting proportions, angles, and the composition of the reference drawing. The goal was modeling precision.

Two complementary renders: AO and Toon

No colored textures were used. I produced two types of renders: Ambient Occlusion to emphasize shadows and volume, and Toon with bold black outlines for a drawing-like effect. Both highlight the modeling work.

Maya and Arnold for a controlled workflow

Maya was used for all modeling, camera setup, and lighting. I used Arnold to render both AO and Toon, adjusting lighting and shaders for a clean and readable result. This project helped me strengthen my skills in Maya and in detailed reproduction.
